I KNOW YOU’VE BEEN HURT BY SOMEONE ELSE
I CAN TELL BE THE WAY YOU CARRY YOURSELF
IF YOU LET ME HERE’S WHAT I’LL DO
I’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU
I’VE LOVED AND I’VE LOST.
Every now and then a song comes along that resonates within you, tugging on your heart strings and causing the involuntary reaction of endlessly hitting repeat. Since the launch of his sophomore album, Drake’s title track ‘Take Care’ featuring Rihanna has had exactly that effect on me. Sampling Jamie XX’s remix of the late, great Gil Scott-Heron’s ‘I’ll Take Care Of U’, there is something about this introspective, dancey ode to the complexities love that has struck a chord with me and I’ve become a woman possessed (a big SOZ to all my Facebook friends are no doubt sick to death of seeing my Spotify updates in their news feed).
I’m unsure as to whether it’s Rihanna’s soulful vocal and Drake’s lively rap style positioned against the housey beat and haunting guitar riff typical of The XX that gives me chills or, as I suspect it might be, the remarkable simplicity of feeling in Gil Scott-Heron’s lyric that dredges up emotions of loves lost every single time I hear it. Excuse me I seem to have a little something in my eye *ahem*.
So you can imagine my obvious delight when I discovered that Florence and her almighty Machine had covered the track during her recent set at BBC Radio1’s Live Lounge. Queue continual playback and head-bopping with closed eyes. In my opinion this dramatic, eerie cover more than does the original justice and reinforces my love of all things Flo. Times 10.
Enough of me babbling on about the track's magnificence, have a little listen for yourself...
